A new stadium in Argentina bearing the name Maradona

Governor Axel Kiselov confirmed, in the presence of Argentine President Alberto Fernandes and Vice President Christina Kirchner, “We decided to rename the stadium the stadium Unico de la Plata Diego Armando Maradona. Diego was Frida (Onico in Spanish) and he deserves to have this unique stadium named after him.”

The stadium was built in the 1990s with the aim of sharing it with local rivals Estudiantes and Jimnasia Esgrima, but after it opened in 2003, it was only used temporarily by both parties.

This modern-style stadium in Argentina will host four matches in the Copa America next July.

Before he died at the age of 60 from heart complications, Maradona was coach of Jimnasia e Esgrima after assuming his position in September 2019.

Another stadium in Buenos Aires bears the name of the former star who won the 1986 World Cup, affiliated with Argentinos Juniors since 2004.

There, the “Golden Child” began his career at the age of fifteen before joining for five years with Boca Juniors.

The “San Paolo” stadium of Napoli, which witnessed Maradona’s miracles in the Italian league between 1984 and 1991, was renamed in honor of Maradona.

The mayor of Naples suggested changing the name of the stadium hours after the departure of Maradona, who had become a cult idol despite his drift towards drugs at the end of his career.
