Redevelopment of avenue de Tervuren: Etterbeek and the Region give their violins

Tests will be carried out to reduce the number of traffic lanes as well as the speed on the central berm, and to set up cycling infrastructure on the north and south side lanes of the avenue.

Lhe municipality of Etterbeek and the Brussels Region have agreed on a progressive redevelopment scheme for avenue de Tervuren between Mérode and square Montgomery. They presented together, Thursday evening, to residents the project which provides, in the short term, the implementation of three tests aimed at the transformation, in the medium term, of the avenue into an urban boulevard.

These tests will consist of the installation of additional cycling infrastructures on the north and south side lanes of the avenue and a reduction in the number of lanes and speed on the central berm.

Following them, a project will be implemented on the basis of a final plan which will be the subject of an application for an urban planning permit. The objective is to improve the quality of life and road safety of an axis that currently holds more than the penetration highway.

According to the presentation made, the cycling infrastructure on the side roads will be put in place by autumn and the test phase of the urban boulevard is scheduled for early 2021, due to the technical complexity of the modifications. to bring to the central berm.

Avenue de Tervuren is one of the busiest cycle routes in the Brussels Region, but the section separating Mérode from Montgomery is currently a missing link in the Brussels cycling network.

During the previous legislature, a test project had been proposed, but the Region and the municipality had not been able to agree on the plans.

This is now the case. In the first phase, the south face of Avenue de Tervuren will be developed with a two-way cycle path.

On the north side lane, a cycle street will be set up with reduction of car traffic through the introduction of a number of traffic changes. The existing crossing with the tram tracks will thus be eliminated, reducing a significant part of the transit traffic present on this track.

In the medium term, the avenue will become an urban boulevard with a reduction in car speed, a decrease in the number of lanes of traffic and a redevelopment of the north and south sides.

The final redevelopment, which will begin in 2023, is already the subject of technical discussions between the Region and the municipality. Proposals will be submitted to residents and stakeholders concerned as part of a dynamic of citizen participation organized by the municipality.

The mayor Vincent De Wolf (MR) and the Minister of Mobility Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) welcomed the fruitful cooperation between the municipality and the Region.
