“Red Sun in New York City: Wildfire Smoke Creates a Unique Phenomenon”

NEW YORK — Did you notice anything strange about the sun when you woke up today?

It still looked like a ball of fire, but it was much redder than usual.

That’s because of the wildfires in Canada. The smoky haze acted like a camera filter to give New York City residents a glimpse of sunspots, and there are plenty.

Remember, it’s not enough of a filter to prevent eye damage, so don’t look at it directly!

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, it remains pretty quiet weather-wise. There is a chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms Monday afternoon. A looming front Wednesday night could also produce some thunder.

Widespread severe weather is not expected on either day. Check here the latest alerts in your neighborhood.

Temps drop to the 60s once the front moves in and stay there through Saturday. We are also watching to see how much a system turning from the southeast impacts in the tri-state area. For now, it is possible that it rains from Saturday to Sunday. Meanwhile, Memorial Day looks sublime.
