Red and blue tuff will occupy almost 10% of the potato areas planted by Latfood Agro for the production of “Adazi Chips” this season.

Latfood Agro, a subsidiary of the food concern Orkla Latvija, has started planting potatoes necessary for the production of Ādažu Čipsi and in total this year the company plans to plant 75 hectares of potatoes, of which almost a tenth or seven hectares will be red and blue potatoes, Orkla Latvija ”.

“In Latvia, we started planting potatoes in the second week of May and will continue until the second half of May, planting about seven to ten hectares of potatoes a day. This year we have started the planting season a little later, because at the beginning of May the ground was still too wet to successfully start this process. We plan to harvest the first crop already in the middle of August, ”points out Ilgvars Krūmiņš, Chairman of the Board of Latfood Agro.

The variety and quality of potatoes play an important role in the production of “Ādažu Čipsi”. Only potato varieties with a sufficiently high dry matter content but a low sugar content are suitable for the production of chips. This year, Latfood Agro has expanded the existing range of potato varieties with one new one – the hitherto known varieties “Lady Claire”, “Lady Rosetta” and “Kiebitz” are now supplemented by the “Sorentina” variety.

Some of the potatoes needed for “Ādažu Čipsi” are grown by our subsidiary “Latfood Agro”, but we buy the rest of the potatoes from farmers, with whom we work closely in both planting and growing periods for years. In Latvia, our largest cooperation farms are located in Vidzeme – Ādaži, Līgatne, Carnikava, as well as in Dobele and elsewhere. ”

This year, Orkla Latvija plans to purchase a total of 19,000 tons of potatoes, which is the same amount of potato purchases as last year. In total, in order to ensure the growing demand, potato purchase agreements have been concluded with 12 farms throughout Latvia, as well as with some farms in Lithuania and Estonia.

Since 2012, Orkla Latvija’s Ādažu Čipsu plant has doubled its total production. During the year, more than 5,000 tons of potato chips and other savory snacks are produced for Ādaži Chips and other brands. Orkla Latvija also manufactures products for other Orkla Group companies in Scandinavia.

In Latvia, Orkla represents and develops Laima, Selga, Staburadze, Ādažu Čipsi, Pedro, Spilva, Gutta, Everest, Latplanta and other brands. The company is part of the Norwegian concern Orkla.
