$ 52 billion of green bonds issued in emerging markets in 2019 (Study)

(Agence Ecofin) – Green bond issues on emerging markets helped mobilize $ 52 billion in 2019; a figure up 21% compared to the performance in 2018. This is mainly reflected in the Emerging Market Green Bond Report, co-published by the fund manager Amundi and the International Finance Corporation, a member of the the World Bank.

This growth was driven by China, which raised $ 34.3 billion. Other issuing countries such as India, Chile, Poland, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates and Brazil have also made significant issues that have raised a total of $ 18 billion. This participation represents an increase of 200% compared to that of the previous year.

In Africa, South Africa was the largest emitter of green bonds in 2019 with the mobilization of $ 724.2 million. It is followed by Nigeria ($ 106.3 million) and Kenya ($ 41.5 million).

Green bond issues in emerging markets range from $ 1.5 million to $ 2.9 billion. In addition, 60 issues of at least $ 300 million were made; which represents a growth of 25% compared to 2018.

Financial institutions remain the main issuers with 59% of mobilizations. They are followed by non-financial corporations (35%), countries (12%), government agencies (5%) and municipalities (0.1%).

5 new emerging markets issued green bonds for the first time in 2019, bringing the number of emerging markets in which this type of financial instrument has been mobilized to 35.
