With “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, Mariah Carey once again took first place in the chart, but a lot of Christmas music was played in 2020 beyond this classic.
Listening to the music in which the world is still all right: In 2020, more holiday songs were heard during Christmas week than in any previous year – GfK reports a new record.
After a historically difficult year 2020, the Germans apparently had a particularly great desire for cuddly, kitsch Christmas sound, with which the world is still reasonably in order. The recently published GfK (Society for Consumer Research) charts show that festive songs during Christmas week were more popular than ever. In the corresponding chart week of the previous year, 51 out of 100 songs were assigned to the Christmas genre. This record was clearly exceeded in 2020: A full two thirds of the single top 100 currently consist of holiday songs, as the GfK reports.
At the top of the Christmas charts, as is so often the case, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” landed before the Wham! Classic “Last Christmas”. Chris Rheas “Driving Home For Christmas” took third place. The first non-Christmas song only comes in 18th (“Jerusalema” by Master KG).

5th place (female, national): Ava Max
In the Spotify list of the female artists most streamed in Germany in 2020, she ranks fifth: Ava Max. The US musician (“Sweet But Psycho”) seems to be even more popular in this country than in her home country: her debut album “Heaven & Hell” ( 2020) took seventh place in the German charts, in the USA it was “only” 27th place.

4th place: Juju
Juju’s big year was actually 2019, when the SXTN rapper released her solo debut “Bling Bling” and was awarded the 1-Live crown twice (picture), but her songs were in great demand again in 2020. In addition to “2012”, a collaboration with Bausa, the hit “Kein Wort” in particular caused a sensation, which she sang with Loredana.

German female musicians are still celebrating success with pop, while the trend of the past few years among men has continued: the most popular musicians are all rappers. First place in the ranking, what else.

Fifth place in the list of the internationally most streamed artists is a little surprise: US musician Halsey landed with her big hit “Maniac” only in second place in the American album charts (13th in Germany). But what benefited her: The record was released in January and was able to collect clicks throughout the year.

Platz 4: Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa has been playing in the premier pop league for years, including internationally, and will be fourth in 2020. Why? Maybe because she released her music at a time when no one else dared. When does the musician become a machine? Bad Bunny (here on the cover of the single “Amorfoda”) may have crossed the line. The bare numbers: The reggeaton star from Puerto Rico released three albums with a total of 46 songs in the 2020 calendar year. At Spotify alone, it generated an incredible 8.3 billion streams – number one in the ranking.

Classic Christmas records also appear in the current album charts – but not at the top. “The Helene Fischer Show – My Most Beautiful Moments (Vol.1)” took first place ahead of Mia Julia’s full-length player “Mitten in Mia”, which was released just before Christmas. The other places follow AC / DC’s long-running “Power Up”, Michael Bublé’s 2011 album “Christmas” and finally in fifth place Paul McCartney, who had occupied the top position with “McCartney III” the previous week.
