Van Gogh’s watercolor brings in 31.3 million euros

A higher price has never been paid for a work by van Gogh painted on paper: in New York his watercolor “Meules de blé” is now on sale for 31.3 million euros. Other works of art by the Dutch painter also generate considerable sums of money.

At a major Impressionist auction in New York, a watercolor by the painter Vincent van Gogh was auctioned for a record price of $ 35.9 million. According to the auction house Christie’s, “Meules de blé” from 1888 achieved the highest price ever paid for a work by the Dutch artist painted on paper. The picture was auctioned for $ 35.86 million (around 31.3 million euros).

The painting was confiscated by the Nazi regime in Paris during the Second World War and was later thought to be lost. It was last in the possession of the Texan businessman Ed Cox, who died in 2020, whose collection has now been auctioned.

The Van Gogh painting “Wooden huts between olive and cypress trees” achieved almost $ 71.4 million. According to Christie’s, it was the fourth highest price ever paid for a work by the artist in an auction. The Van Gogh painting “Young Man with Cornflower” was auctioned for around $ 46.7 million.

At the auction of the Cox collection, the painting “L’Estaque with Red Roofs” by Paul Cézanne fetched more than $ 55 million. Meanwhile, the Getty Museum in Los Angeles paid a record price for a work by the French impressionist Gustave Caillebotte: “Young Man at the Window” achieved $ 53 million.

The Getty Museum called the painting a “masterpiece of modern urban realism of the 19th century”. The previous maximum price for a work by the artist (1848-1894) was $ 22 million for the painting “Couple Strolling”, which Christie’s auctioned in London in 2019.

A total of 23 works by Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Berthe Morisot were auctioned at the Rockefeller Center in New York. Total proceeds were $ 332 million.
