Record! China’s ‘artificial sun’ reaches 120 million degrees Celsius

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – China has just announced a new milestone with its artificial sun. It was recorded that the sun reached 120 million degrees Celsius in 101 seconds and had been at 160 million degrees Celsius for 20 seconds.

This result broke the previous record of maintaining a plasma temperature of 100 million Celsius in 100 seconds.

This achievement is a big step towards testing the fusion reactor. According to the Director of the Physics Department of Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, Li Miao said this result is to achieve the goal of keeping the temperature at a stable level for a long time.

“The breakthrough is a significant progress and the ultimate goal should be the temperature at a stable level for a long time,” Li Miao said, quoted by the Global Times, Sunday (30/5/2021).

The result of plasma temperatures above 100 million Celsius is one of the main challenges in utilizing nuclear fusion. The temperature at the sun’s core is believed to be around 15 million Celsius, or the plasma at the core of the device is seven times hotter than the sun.

The artificial sun was created to replicate the nuclear fusion process that occurs naturally in the sun and other stars. This is done to provide unlimited clean energy through controlled nuclear fusion.

Director of the Energy Economics Research Center at Xiamen University, Lin Boqiang said if the technology could be applied commercially it would have enormous economic benefits.

However, this technology is still in the experimental stage. So according to Lin Boqiang, it may take 30 years for the technology to be widely used.

“This is more like a critical future technology to drive green development in China,” he said.
