Record-breaking Freezing Temperatures Hit Northern and Central China

Since December 11, the Beijing Weather Observatory has recorded more than 300 hours of freezing temperatures. Never before since measurements began in 1951 have there been so many, writes the state newspaper Beijing Daily. According to the newspaper, it was colder than -10 degrees Celsius in Beijing for 9 days in a row.

Several areas in northern and central China are experiencing extreme cold this month. The cold waves follow each other. According to the National Weather Institute, 78 weather stations across China already recorded records this month. Average temperatures for December in the north and center reached 1961 records, it said. Motorways and schools are regularly closed due to snow storms.
