Recognizing the Symptoms and Treatment of TB (Tuberculosis) – A Guide from Malang Regency Health Service

Malang Regency, SJP — Has symptoms of coughing and is referred to as an infectious disease, TB (Tuberculosis) or by the public it is often called wet lung. This is a disease to be wary of.

For this reason, the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Sub-Correct of the Malang Regency Health Service (Dinkes) Chairiyah SKM MM explained that the public must know how to recognize the main symptoms of TB.

“The main symptom is a cough with phlegm accompanied by it or not, with a duration of 2 weeks, but coughs that are less than 2 weeks should also be checked,” he said to Suarajatimpost.com, Friday (20/10/2023) evening.

Chair added that there were additional symptoms, namely shortness of breath, drastic weight loss, weakness, decreased appetite, night sweats even without activity.

So how is it handled?

The Chair answered that if an individual has been infected with these symptoms, they should immediately go to the nearest Community Health Center or Hospital.

“Get checked immediately if you know these symptoms, and if you are checked if you have TB, you must obey the doctor’s instructions, otherwise it could become resistant,” he answered.

He explained that TB patients must undergo mandatory 6 months of treatment for those infected with sensitive TB. If you do not follow the instructions, it can result in treatment failure, relapse and even drug resistance or immunity.

Not only that, the consequences are fatal if the individual does not seek treatment or receives treatment irregularly, which can result in death.

According to him, it is very dangerous if patients do not comply. Even though the patient feels good when taking the medicine for about 2 weeks, the medicine must still be continued because not all bacteria will die if they take the medicine for less than 6 months.

“And while maintaining a clean and healthy lifestyle so that you don’t get infected again, everyone who has had contact with TB sufferers must also undergo a health check to find out whether they are sick or not,” he explained.

He also explained that if you are found to be sick, you have to take medicine, even if you are not sick, but if there are signs that you are infected, you should take TB prevention medicine.

Likewise, patients are already in household contact and are in close contact if they suffer from the same illness or are taking TB medication.

“For household contacts or close contacts with people who have TB, even if they are not sick with TB but there are signs that they have been infected, it is highly recommended to take TB prevention medication so they don’t become sick with active TB,” he said.

He explained that there are 4 first-line/sensitive drugs for TB treatment, namely:

Isoniazid
Rifampisin
Pyrazinamide
Ethambutol

All medicines given by the doctor must be swallowed during the treatment period and someone must remind you.

So what if it becomes resistant?

Chair explained that the patient would be treated for two years. “If it becomes resistant, there will be more types (of medication) and it could take up to 2 years of treatment or treatment,” he concluded.

Chair hopes that with more information about TB disease, the public will understand and not underestimate the symptoms.

The Health Department will continue to socialize about TB, because by 2030 nationally there is a target for Indonesia to be endemic free, especially for this disease.
