Recognize the Symptoms of Major Depression and How to Overcome It

JawaPos.com – During the Covid-19 pandemic, depression is a condition that arises due to economic, health and social impacts. Depression is divided again, one of which is major depression.

In Johnson & Johnson’s official statement in Indonesia on increasing awareness of mental health, through the virtual Depression Awareness Campaign ‘Kupas Complete Regarding Depression’, it is revealed what depression is and how to overcome it. According to Mental Health Expert dr.Nalini Muhdi Agung, Sp.KJ(K), FISCM as Chair of the Women’s Mental Health Section at PDSKJI (Association of Indonesian Mental Medicine Specialists) depression is feeling very sad or in a bad mood.

“Most of us have experienced it. In some people depression can subside and have no impact, but for others depression can be a severe disorder that has an impact on their mental health,” he said virtually recently.

This condition can lead to major depressive disorder. What’s that? In psychiatry or psychiatry, to diagnose someone with major depressive disorder, it is necessary to know what the symptoms are. Major depressive disorder is not only an emotional or mood disorder, but generally also shows typical physical, psychological and social symptoms.

What are the Symptoms?

Some of the symptoms of major depressive disorder are persistent sadness, pessimism, helplessness, irritability, insomnia, difficulty eating, withdrawing, and even attempting suicide. As a disease, major depressive disorder can be treated properly by medical personnel or mental health professionals. In addition, family and companions play an important role in the patient’s recovery.

How to fix it

Treatment of major depressive disorder may require a combination of psychoeducation, psychotherapy, medication or pharmacotherapy (using antidepressants available in tablet form, nasal sprays, and so on), and neurostimulation where examples of neurostimulation are repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT).

If you or your family or friends experience the symptoms listed above and suspect major depressive disorder, especially if there is an intention to hurt yourself and or commit suicide, immediately consult a mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist, general practitioner, or psychologist.
