  • Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new generation of its largest sedan, the S-Class

  • The car is traditionally a demonstration of the latest technologies of the brand, its new functions are focused on comfort

  • The car is decorated with electrically recessed handles, the cabin is dominated by a gigantic display of the MBUX system

  • The new S-Class is longer than its predecessor, so it will offer more space

Top management sedans are a category in which individual carmakers proudly present their latest technologies. Over time, these will become smaller models. Audi A8, BMW 7 or Mercedes-Benz S-Class brought a number of interesting innovations to the automotive industry. That’s why their premiere is always a big event. And it is no different now that Suttgart is showcasing a new generation of its “Eska“.

At first glance, the new Mercedes-Benz S looks more like a bigger facelift than the new generation. But this is already a habit with luxury cars, as evidenced by Tuesday’s premiere of the new Rolls-Royce Ghost. However, the car boasts a longer bow, a new radiator grille and headlights, and a more flowing rear end, which is decorated with LED brake lights. Their style is similar, for example sedan-coupe CLS. Aerodynamics were considered, for example thanks to modified rear-view mirrors or electrically recessed handles, the new “Esko” has an air resistance coefficient of only 0.22. That’s great value, for example Tesla Model S offers 0.24.

The S-Class has also grown in length compared to the previous generation. In the basic version, you will measure it 5289 mm, which is 54 mm more than before. Mercedes will immediately offer an extended variant with a length of 5289 mm. In both cases, the car will have a suitcase with a volume of 550 liters, which is 20 liters more. Not that it mattered that again.

Giant display instead of baroque

However, the interior underwent the biggest changes. It could be said that it has little to do with the past. Baroque round shapes of a massive dashboard replaced airspace. The dashboard now looks uniform, in addition to the door panels. In addition, you can decorate this area with luxurious decor, whether it is piano lacquer, wood or carbon fiber.

But for the first time, everyone’s eyes will undoubtedly rest on the gigantic display in the middle. The touch screen does not have such a large diagonal – 12.8 inches, but compared to widescreen displays, its shape probably offers more space. It is the basis for the well-known MBUX system in the latest design, which can respond voice to almost thirty languages. A number of functions were also hidden here, including air conditioning control. In total, the new S-Class needs 27 fewer buttons than its predecessor. The display is OLED, which promises a sharper color display.

Another interesting novelty is the head-up display with embedded reality. It works similarly to, for example Škoda Enyaq was unveiled on Tuesday. It shows instructions as if over the road, helping the driver not to get lost on the road. The screen in front of the driver then has a diagonal of 12.3 inches and also has fine graphics. It will offer several display modes and with them the atmosphere on board will change. Mercedes will use not only perfectly processed ambient lighting, but also soothing tones emitted by 30 speakers and four subwoofers of the luxurious Burmester system.

“Esko” is a car in which the owners drive not only behind the wheel, but also in the VIP area at the back right. Therefore, the carmaker also focused on the comfort of these passengers. There will be a variant with a cab for four, where the rear seats will be divided by a panel with many interesting features. The coffee table will also slide out of it. VIPs will have displays for their own entertainment, an adjustable chair and the ability to also control the MBUX system by voice.

Six-cylinder, eight-cylinder, hybrid

And what about engines? There will be a number of them, Mercedes has so far confirmed only a few. The basis of the offer should be an in-line six-cylinder petrol engine with a three-liter volume supplemented by a 48V network and a starter-generator. It will offer 367 horsepower and will be sold under the name S450 4Matic. It should be connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission. He gives a hundred in 5.1 seconds. It is also ready for the second engine, ie the model marked as S500 4Matic. It will power a double-turbocharged V8 with an output of 434 horsepower. It should accelerate from zero to 100 km / h in 4.9 seconds.

However, the carmaker did not betray diesel engines either. The popular S 350 d will return to the market either as a rear wheel or with 4Matic all-wheel drive. It will have 286 hp and 600 Nm of torque. It promises acceleration from zero to 100 km / h in 6.2 seconds. The more powerful S 350 d then offers 330 horsepower and a “twist” of 700 Nm. One hundred will fall in 5.4 seconds. A plug-in hybrid motorization will also appear in the near future.

Not only the adjustable air suspension will take care of comfortable travel, but also the rear axle, which will make it easier to maneuver with a large sedan. Engineers also worked on soundproofing the interior. All indications are that the new generation of the Mercedes S-Class is not ashamed.
