Recap of the Offseason Coaching Changes in the NBA: Who’s In, Who’s Out, and Why?

With six head coach positions released during the offseason, there is logically a lot of movement on the NBA benches. Between personal departures for better positions and staff changes, a big recap is needed to see more clearly on the side of tactical teams in the NBA!

But in fact, why are there so many departures from assistant coaches? Quite simply because an NBA coach, when he arrives at his post, takes care to concoct his dream team intellectuals on the bench with very distinct specialties that correspond to his philosophy of play. Suddenly, when things are not going too well during the season and a coach walks out (Hello Steve Nash), well a vacant coach takes over until the end of the season with the coaching staff of his predecessor. Except that he finds himself with bugs on the bench which may not correspond to his coaching. And inevitably when there are 6 coaches fired at the end of the season, you have a lot of cards that go with it:

We start with Boston and its inevitable changes for this off-season:

  • The former Sixers assistant Sam Cassell will join the bench of C’s. Joe Mazzula is a good example of a coach who inherits a bench he did not choose with the dismissal of Ime Udoka. And anyway, Ben Sullivan, Mike Moser and Garett Jackson, former assistants of Ime, leave Boston to join the former coach of the Greens in Houston. Enough to free up space for Joe to make his own grub.
  • Always among the C’s, we find Charles Leeformer second in command to Mike Budenholzer who left Milwaukee with him to become Joe Mazzulla’s right arm. Finalist for the positions of head coach at the Raptors and the Pistons, Charles is perhaps one of the best assistant coaches in office. Another nice shot from Boston.

On the side of Phoenixthe dismissal of Monty Williams leaves room for Frank Vogel to build his staff:

  • First positive point, the assistant Kevin Young has been extended $2 million a season to stay in Arizona. Young was even backed by Devin Booker to take over the franchise. Known for his offensive qualities, there is enough to predict a nice fit with the defensive philosophy of Frank Vogel.
  • In the arrival box, we find Stephen Silas, former head coach of the Houston Rockets this season. Well, when we see the fiasco in which Texas has been plunged this season, we say to ourselves that a position with less responsibility cannot hurt Silas…
  • David Fizdale, former head coach of the Knicks and Grizzlies, who comes from an experience in the front office of Jazz, will resume the bottle on an NBA bench with the Suns.

And to Milwaukee what does it say ? The dismissal of Mike Budenholzer left full powers to Adrian Griffin to build his team:

  • The former Blazers coach Terry Stotts leaves on an NBA bench to bring his experience to a rookie coach who will need it.
  • Coming out of an assistant position in Atlanta, it’s Joe Prunty who returns home to accompany Adrian Griffin. Having occupied two vacant head coach positions, including one in Milwaukee, we are still on a more than serious CV.
  • Patrick Mutombo also arrives in Wisconsin after assisting Monty Williams at the Suns last year. A former assistant to Dwane Casey, Nick Nurse and the Raptors 905, Patrick’s butt knows the comfort of NBA chairs.

AT Philadelphiathe recent appointment of Nick Nurse to replace Doc Rivers is only beginning to take shape:

  • Only Bobby Jackson, a former longtime assistant to the Sacramento Kings, joined the ranks of the Sixers. The rest should fall in the coming weeks.

Coast Brooklynthe departures of Igor Kokoskov, Brian Keefe and Tiago Splitter (Hello Steve Nash) leave a void on Jacque Vaughn’s bench:

  • The first recruit is Kevin Ollie. Former NCAA coach at the head of UConn then coach of the Overtime Elite high school program, Kevin will taste the cushions of NBA chairs for the first time. The rest of the wizards should drop soon.

Note, the large signature of James Borrego at the Pelicans. The former head coach of the Hornets will find a bench by becoming the right arm of Willie Green. James was surely one of the most talented unemployed former NBA coaches on the market: a real good pick for New Orleans!

The NBA season is not even over yet as job interviews follow one another from the various front offices. A lot of names have already fallen but there are still positions to be filled! The list should grow in the coming weeks.
