In the spring, Edeka had already reached an agreement with the new Real owners to take over 53 stores – in the last few weeks the information leaked that they wanted to find more branches. How many of the branch takeovers will ultimately be approved by the Federal Cartel Office is still unclear.
An important factor in this: the Federal Cartel Office wants to avoid that only one retail company operates in the immediate vicinity. This is to prevent customers from being disadvantaged and competition from coming to a standstill. Apparently, both Kaufland and Edeka have also considered these concerns in their lists, which is why industry experts expect quick decisions from the office.
