The Federal Cartel Office has now also given the go-ahead for the Real break-up to keep 64 Real branches. These locations remain real.

Düsseldorf/Bonn – In January it was the message par excellence in German retail: stay despite the breakup up to 60 branches of the hypermarket chain Real in Germany*. Of the Real*-Owner SCP hands over the locations to the family office of financial investor Sven Tischendorf. What was still missing, however, was approval for the takeover and continued operation by the Federal Cartel Office. This release has now been granted.

Real break-up: Approval granted to maintain a total of 64 Real markets

“It is good news that the existence of further Real locations is secured. The locations are to continue to operate under the Real flag with the participation of the previous management. In addition to the planning security for the employees, this is also associated with an opportunity for competition,” explained Andreas Mundt, President of the Federal Cartel Office, in March 2022. In the meantime, five further locations have been added, so that 64 Real branches can now remain Real in the future*.

Which locations these are has already been almost completely determined. According to Real’s current location fee list, a total of 64 branches, that will be preserved as Real, already announced*. According to this, it will continue to be used in eleven German federal states, including North Rhine-Westphalia*, real markets type. More could be added, according to Real. “There are still a few branches where no decision has been made,” explains the company when asked by 24RHEIN*. The company is currently unable to say how many Real stores would ultimately remain with Real.

Real breakup: Continued operation of Real branches saves around 5,000 jobs

real busting

The hypermarket chain Real gets smashed*. This means that most of the previously around 270 Real branches in Germany were either operated by another Grocery store* will be taken over or closed forever. Many takeovers already happened in 2021. The supermarket chain has the lion’s share of the branches Kaufland* secured. But also Edeka*, Globus* and rewe* have participated in the Real break-up* in the past few weeks and months and are taking over several locations in Germany.

In January 2022 it was announced that up to 60 Real branches should remain under the old name. The current Real owner SCP will hand this over to the family office of the Tischendorf entrepreneurial family on July 1, 2022. Then the real break-up should be over.

More than 5,000 people work in the 64 Real branches. Through a so-called “management buy-out”, i.e. the purchase of a company by its management, with the participation of financial investor Dr. Sven Tischendorf, the takeover is to take place officially in the next few months. July 1, 2022 is currently planned for this, which is also the intended end of the real break-up. “Then the locations are to be continued by a team of Real managers together with the Tischendorf entrepreneurial family under the ‘Real’ brand,” according to the Bundeskartellamt.
