The GDL strike is in round three. The strike has been going on again since Thursday. 60 percent of the trains are affected. The overview of all train connections in NRW.

Düsseldorf – Commuters and travelers in North Rhine-Westphalia have to be prepared for delays and train cancellations: The GDL has called for a third wave of strikes. The strike has been going on again since Thursday night, and all passenger traffic has been affected since 2 a.m. – up to and including Tuesday, September 7th (2 a.m.).

Rail strike announced: what we know so far

The DB expects that around 40 percent of the trains in regional and S-Bahn traffic could run. According to its own statements, this is the aim of the railway. “The number of trains on offer will, however, vary greatly depending on the region,” says a statement.

Again there are big problems, failures and delays. Next to RE and RB routes are also affected by S-Bahn trains in North Rhine-Westphalia. Not only is regional traffic affected by the strike, but long-distance traffic is also being hit again – only one in four trains runs there.

During the last train strike, several RE, RB lines and S-Bahn lines in NRW completely failed. Others only drove every hour or even every two hours. Many large cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf, Essen, Dortmund or Mönchengladbach were directly affected. It is similar with the third strike.

Rail strike in NRW: These RE and RB routes are completely canceled

Several regional railways are completely paralyzed by the strike. Several railway lines in Düsseldorf, Cologne, Dortmund and Aachen are affected. According to information from Deutsche Bahn, these routes fall from September 2 (2 a.m.) to September 7 (2 a.m.) completely the end:

  • RE2: Düsseldorf – Duisburg – Essen – Gelsenkirchen – Recklinghausen – Münster – Osnabrück (expected to run from September 6th, 11 a.m.)
  • RE8: Mönchengladbach – Cologne – Cologne / Bonn Airport – Troisdorf – Bonn-Beuel – Koblenz
  • RE9: Aachen – Cologne – Troisdorf – Au (Sieg) –Betzdorf – Siegen
  • RE18: Heerlen–Herzogenrath
  • RB20: Stolberg / Alsdorf – Herzogenrath – Aachen – Stolberg – Stolberg old town / Düren
  • RB23/S23: Bonn Hbf – Rheinbach (Euskirchen) (There are rail replacement buses running between Euskirchen and Rheinbach)
  • RB25: Cologne – Overath – Engelskirchen – Marienheide – Meinerzhagen – Lüdenscheid
  • RB28: Neuwied – Niederlahnstein
  • RB30: Ahrbrück – Remagen – Bonn
  • RB33: Geilenkirchen – Heinsberg – Mönchengladbach – Krefeld –Duisburg – Essen
  • RB38: Cologne trade fair / Deutz-Horrem-Bedburg
  • RB39: Remagen – Dernau (There are already buses in the rail replacement service due to the storm damage)

Rail strike in NRW: These S-Bahn lines are completely out of order

There are also failures on the S-Bahn lines. These four lines fail completely:

  • S4: Unna – Unna-Königsborn – Dortmund-Dorstfeld – Dortmund – Lütgendortmund
  • S8: Hagen – Wuppertal – Düsseldorf – Neuss – Mönchengladbach
  • S11: Düsseldorf Airport Terminal – Düsseldorf – Neuss – Dormagen – Cologne – Bergisch Gladbach
  • S68: Wuppertal – Vohwinkel – Düsseldorf – Langenfeld (Rheinl)

Engine drivers’ strike: These NRW routes are also affected

In addition to the failures, passengers also have to reckon with considerable restrictions on several railway lines. This can lead to delays, impairments and also occasional failures:

  • RB27: Mönchengladbach – Cologne – Cologne / Bonn Airport – Troisdorf – Bonn Beuel – Koenigswinter – Bad Honnef (Rhine) –Linz am Rhein – Neuwied – Koblenz. (Trains only run every two hours)
  • RE42: Mönchengladbach – Krefeld – Duisburg – Essen – Gelsenkirchen – Münster (the trains run between Münster and Mönchengladbach as usual, the trains with start / finish at Essen Hbf are canceled)
  • RB51: Dortmund – Lünen – Coesfeld – Gronau – Enschede (trains only run every two hours; there is no additional shuttle train between Lünen and Dortmund)
  • RB63: Münster – Coesfeld (trains only run every two hours)
  • RB64: Münster – Gronau – Enschede (trains only run every hour)
  • S1: Dortmund – Essen – Duisburg – Düsseldorf – Solingen (trains only run every hour)
  • S6: Essen – Ratingen Ost – Düsseldorf – Cologne (trains only run every hour)
  • S12: Au (Sieg) –Hennef – Troisdorf – Cologne / Bonn Airport – Cologne – Horrem (trains only run every hour)
  • S19: Au (Sieg) –Hennef – Troisdorf – Cologne / Bonn Airport – Cologne – Horrem – Düren (trains only run every hour)

Strike on the railways: These DB routes in North Rhine-Westphalia run without restrictions

According to information from the VRR and Deutsche Bahn, only two RE and RB lines and one S-Bahn line should not be affected by the strike and continue to “operate without restrictions”. This applies to these routes:

  • RE17: Hagen – Schwerte (Ruhr) –Bestwig – Warburg – Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe
  • RB52: Dortmund – Hagen – Lüdenscheid
  • S5: Hagen – Witten – Dortmund

Other railway companies are one hope for NRW commuters. Because some S-Bahn, regional express trains and regional trains are operated by other transport companies such as Keolis Deutschland (eurobahn), National Express, Abellio and Regiobahn. Impact of the strike possible

“Effects of the strikes during ongoing operations cannot be completely ruled out, however, as the DB Netz division, which is responsible for the rail infrastructure, is also to be partly on strike,” says National Express, for example.
