Rare Meteor Rain Appears for the First Time in 2021

Jakarta: A rare meteor shower that has never been seen before will decorate the Earth’s sky in 2021. The meteor shower will scatter comet dust over the southernmost region on Earth.

The meteor shower, titled Finlay-id, is predicted to last about 10 days in autumn, or between September and December, in 2021. This meteor shower is said to appear in southern latitudes, the location of the Earth with a small number of landmasses.

Citing Space.com, a research astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, United States, Diego Janches calls this making Finlay-id not only interesting, but also very difficult to observe.

Janches also estimated that the meteor shower sprinkles came from the constellation Ara (Altar), although until now the exact point of prediction for meteors was not known, considering that this meteor shower was a new event.

In addition, Janches added a prediction showing that this Finlay-id event will begin to occur around the end of September and reach its peak on 7 October.

For information, meteor showers occur when the Earth circles the sun, and occasionally walks through the debris left by comets and asteroids. These particles interact with Earth’s atmosphere and produce events that are often referred to as shooting stars.

Generally, these clouds remain in the same location allowing the Earth to pass through the debris cloud each year, which is why large meteor showers such as the Perseids and Geminids become annual events.

However, Janches explained that the Finlay-id meteor shower has a chance to occur only once. If it happens several times, Janches said this meteor shower will not occur every year.

Meanwhile, the name of the meteor shower is reportedly inspired by Comet 15P / Finlay, which is about two kilometers wide, and has the potential to have a hidden dust bag that has a chance to collide with Earth several years from now.
