Rare Knautia Bees Found in Zeeland Village of Wemeldinge

A rare bee species has been found in the Zeeland village of Wemeldinge. In order not to disturb the animals, the municipality of Kapelle has determined that there is no longer mowing in the area where they were found.

It concerns a number of rare knautia bees, writes Regional broadcaster the Bevelanden. They were found by ecologist Lucien Calle of Stichting Landschapsbeheer Zeeland. He found a total of nine bees near the dike on the Boulevard. There may be more, because the bees mainly live underground.

The municipality wanted to have the area around the dike mowed. That is why there was a search for protected animal and plant species in the area. Due to the discovery of the rare bees, there will be no more mowing for the time being.

Unlike other bees, knautia bees do not live in swarms. Like the bumblebee, the knautia bee collects its own food and builds its own nest. The bees are only found in a few parts of Zeeland.
