Racism – Bremen – trade unions warn of general suspicion against fire brigade society

Bremen (dpa / lni) – After a special investigator criticized the leadership culture of the Bremen fire brigade, several unions have warned of a general suspicion against the fire brigade. “We are sure that there are no racist structures in the Bremen fire brigade and at the same time we are aware that it cannot be ruled out that individuals with right-wing extremist ideas can be active in such a large organization,” said the trade unions Verdi, DFeuG and komba in a joint statement on Saturday.

The former President of the Higher Regional Court, Karen Buse, concluded in her final report presented on Friday that a male, hierarchical, traditional and change-resistant organizational culture makes the integration of people with deviating characteristics such as women, migrants and homosexuals more difficult.

At the end of November 2020, allegations became known that members of a security department had shared right-wing extremist and racist content in chats for years. According to the authorities, it was also about misogynist and sexist incidents as well as bullying.

“Racist, discriminatory language has no place in the fire brigade. We have to show an anti-racist attitude very clearly – in our actions and in our vocabulary,” the unions made clear. However, Ms Buse stated in her report that these were only isolated cases. That is why it is particularly important that the entire Bremen fire brigade is not placed under general suspicion.
