Questions from local residents about the waste sorting center project in Draguignan

Where exactly is the site?

A piece encroaches on the southern part of the landscaped cemetery, in order to establish 3 hectares of installation there. We bought 17 hectares from Azur Vert at Puits de l’Éouvé, which will remain a natural area. Finally, we are in negotiations for a strip of 10 hectares belonging to the Army, at the Vaugine camp, in order to be able to place an access away from the houses, on the RD54. This represents 30 hectares in total. The aim is for the center to blend into the landscape.

Why install the unit in a natural area?

We commissioned a third-party research firm that carried out a fairly thorough and objective study. They determined the criteria: proximity to the waste deposit (Draguignan) in order to avoid the trucks having to make long journeys. You need a topography, and an available surface that corresponds to the nature of the project while ensuring that it is not a protected area. Once all this is taken into account, there is not much left. They offered us three potential plots: one that was automatically eliminated because it is an environmental compensation, put under glass for 30 years. It was around the prison, route de Lorgues. A second field has been approached to the north of the one chosen, belonging to the Army, which uses it. The third is therefore the best, the one we have chosen.

How will the preprocessing site work?

There will be equipment that will separate metals, such as tins, cans. The rest of the waste goes into another machine where the lighter ones – cardboard, textiles, plastic… – will be separated from the heavy ones (often food, which will be dried and sent to Bagnols-en-Fôret in Vallon des Pins for landfill).

Anything that is neither hazardous nor recyclable will be turned into solid recovered fuel to create energy in a boiler.

The heat produced injected into a network in the form of water or steam will pass through pipes under the road and will be connected to other boilers which will supply buildings in the city centre.

Why were the Mottois not invited to this meeting?

At first we decided to alert the homes around, ie 250 within a radius of one kilometer.

We will organize points with the others concerned as we go along.

Presenting the project to us as revolutionary and green is good, but there are bound to be constraints on a file of this magnitude. What are they?

You have to understand that we are obliged to carry out this type of project at the present time. We do our best to have as little impact as possible. Afterwards, we gave you a quick presentation and we are obviously available and transparent to discuss all aspects with you. You seem to be very involved, we can organize meetings with spokespersons from each district concerned in order to provide you with proof of what we are advancing.
