Public Transportation Challenges: The Realities of Flexible Bus Routes and the Impact on Commuters

“Reserving a ride works great,” she says. “I receive confirmation half an hour in advance and about ten minutes in advance I receive a message that the bus is coming.”

The real problem turns out to be the bus ride itself. “You know when you leave, but not when you arrive. Because that depends on who might get on during your ride. If someone else reserves a ride with your flex bus, they may follow a different route.”

That appears to have consequences. “As a result, a journey can take twice as long. So if you have to be somewhere at a fixed time, you have to allow for a lot of spare time. It is not an ideal means of transport for commuting.”

“This is of course a choice that you have to make, and that is inherent to flexible transport,” responds director general Ann Schoubs of De Lijn in “De morgen”, on Radio 1. “As a traveler you of course have to make a choice: My departure time or my arrival time is very important.” Schoubs realizes that flexible transport requires “extra attention” and promises a “continuous internal evaluation”.
