Public Security Survey of Catalonia 2021: Scams and Identity Fraud

The Public Security Survey of Catalonia (ESPC)published by Department of the Interiorshows that one in three Catalans claims to have been a victim of a scam the fraud this 2021.

The most of the facts crimes counted in the survey are ‘on line‘ (34%), but those who took legal measures are the minority. In fact, there are cases in which the person is not even aware that she has been scammed.

This is what can happen with the nueva type of fraud that the National Police warns, a text message that reaches the victims’ email informing of a false dose of the Covid vaccine.

The sender is supposedly Ministry of Health and your subject line is something like: “We have an urgent announcement about the extra dose of vaccine!” This is a case of identity fraud, also know as ‘phishing‘.

In the body appears a ‘link’ that automatically downloads a malicious ‘zip’ file. To invite the victim to click, they are told that having been selected for this new extra dose, they can choose between different brands of injectable, which you can select in the link.

Similar cases of scams have also been reported, but through a call from Social Securityalso offering a booster dose and requesting personal information from the victim for more credibility.

In these calls, scammers inform the recipient that they have received a Verification code for the reservation of the extra dose of the Covid vaccine. To complete the reservation process, request that the recipient reveal these six digits that appear on your mobile.

However, what scammers are really doing is take over the victim’s WhatsApp account, since this revealed password is the access door to the application. This scam is common and is known as the ‘six digit scam‘.

What to do if we have already downloaded the file

The Police recommends never downloading “suspicious” files. If you still receive the message, you must go to report the facts to a police station. The steps you must follow after that will be the following:

Disinfect the terminal in which the malicious file was downloaded

Delete all terminals of the downloaded file, including the Stationery of recycling.

It is recommended to have updated the operating system and the antivirusso they can alert you of other possible malicious emails
