Baby Seals Learn to Talk Like Humans

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

A baby starts talking with simple words like “Buu”, “Baa”, and so on. As people age, the way humans talk will be affected by the environment.

Usually, babies to young children don’t think about controlling the intensity or volume of their voices and tend to scream.

Scientists saw a similar pattern in baby seals. This was concluded after the Biology study involved eight baby seals.

From research published in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B Biological Sciences, it can be concluded that seals will lower their pitch as they get older.

Seals are said to relent, lower their voices, instead of following the noisy surroundings with high-pitched voices.

“We think they [anjing laut] increase the intensity of the sound as the noise increases,” said Andrea Ravignani, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. CNet.

“However, what seals do is lower the pitch of their voices to avoid the frequency range of the noise.”

Seals are considered to have good control in determining the tone of voice and what is conveyed, like humans in general.

This is in contrast to dogs, which tend to train louder sounds as they get older. Ravignani and his team say that seals do not have this tendency.

The study explains why seals’ voices are more controlled with age. First, it is a response from their habitat.

Lower tones spread better in the wind, as is often found in seal habitat. They understand how to communicate effectively.

With good control, seals are also said to be able to produce sounds that are more melodious than other animals.

“Humans’ ability to talk and sing depends on the excellent control of our vocal organs,” says Ravignani, explaining the seal and human analogy.
