Public lighting is gradually switching to LEDs in Brioude (Haute-Loire)

No less than 650 fluorescent balloon lamps will be gradually replaced over the coming months in the city of Saint-Julien.

“This is in line with the ecological transition that we want to put in place in Brioude. These balloons are old, consume a lot, more than 200 W and require a lot of maintenance. “

Jean-Luc Vachelard (Mayor of Brioude)

Public lighting costs the municipality nearly 100,000 euros per year and more than 25,000 euros for maintenance.

The town hall therefore undertook to remove all the old fluorescent balloons, in the year 2021, by LEDs. “Much more economical and energy efficient. This will cut power consumption and maintenance costs by four or five. “
Since December 17, 87 lamps have been installed. And the first areas affected by these changes are the streets and avenue Andocède-Carrot, de la Croix-de-Reclus, des Fonts-Neuves, Jules-Vallès, Emmanuel-Chatillon, du 8-mai, de la Gare, Guynemer, Bel -Air, Gravenot and de Geste. A new study has been underway since October, to replace nearly 350 additional lamps in the northwestern neighborhoods. It should be approved at the municipal council in February 2021. The 200 lamps in the center and in the eastern neighborhoods will be the subject of a final installment which “will undoubtedly be approved by the council in June 2021”.

These new devices also have the advantage of being adjustable in intensity. “For the moment, the lamps go out at a rate of one in two at 9:30 pm, to start again at 7:30 am While with the technology of the LEDs, all the lamps will remain on. In addition, there will be a 70% reduction in power from 9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. ”Street lighting will therefore remain homogeneous, without black holes.
“The inhabitants will gain in terms of safety”, supports the municipality which wants to go even further. In fact, studies are currently underway to switch municipal stadium lighting to LED.
