Psyonix: Rocket League only runs offline under MacOS and Linux

The California developer studio Psyonix no longer wants to support its car football action game Rocket League under MacOS and Linux (meaning SteamOS). Players can then only participate in online games on the console and on the Windows PC. A final patch for MacOS and Linux is scheduled for release in March 2020. From then on, it was only possible to play local multiplayer games – for example via split screen.

Psyonix writes on his blogthat it’s getting more and more difficult “new technologies” support under the two affected operating systems. The studio does not provide any further information. It points out that players from the Mac computer could switch to Windows via boot camp, for example. Under Linux, Rocket League over Proton or Wine can be used – however, such wrappers have a noticeable impact on performance.

Psychonix’s decision is also surprising because Rocket League was one of the pioneers of crossplay, i.e. cross-platform multiplayer games. However, this did not affect MacOS and Linux, but the consoles – the game was one of the first to play against friends on Playstation 4, for example on Xbox One.

The affected part of the community is understandably disappointed. There are discussions about the extent to which Epic Games could be partly responsible for the end of MacOS and Linux. The studio had bought Psychonix in May 2019. Actually, Rocket League should be available in the Epic Games Store by the end of 2019 at the latest – which only supports Windows, but not MacOS and Linux.

The announcement now made could be a sign that a change is imminent. So far, the PC version is still only available via Steam, for all three operating systems mentioned. Rocket League is available on console for Playstation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
