PS5 was taken apart by iFixit to find out the degree of repairability

The site iFixit specializes in disassembly and repair some things. They range from simple appliances to the most coveted and complex technological objects. In this case the site experts have taken apart and analyzed one PS5, discovering that it has decent potential for repair.

According to iFixit, in fact, Playstation 5 has a score of repairability of 7 out of 10.

The reason for this vote is that on the one hand the console features a relatively modular and easy-to-repair design, but there are some software locks and annoying security screws. Torx that create “annoying” obstacles for the site.

As for the more particular elements of the console, on top of everything there is certainly the data storage system. On the one hand there is a SSD custom with a proprietary controller, or the flagship of the console, that element capable of guaranteeing data transfer speeds from 8-9GB / s thanks to 12 internal channels and four PCIe 4.0 lanes that connect the SSD to the central SoC. The easily accessible expansion slot (even if not yet activated) is also a very atypical and interesting element.

The site also praises the cooling system liquid metal, the huge fan and the overlapping heatpipes, all things that guarantee excellent dissipation. The only criticality could come if the liquid metal arrives “where it shouldn’t”, because in addition to excellent thermal conductivity it also combines electrical conductivity. One thing that could create problems in case there is some unwanted contact.

Finally theoptical drive it is not easily replaceable, because it is managed via software, something that could greatly limit the compatible pieces. Excellent, however, the possibility of being able to vacuum dust easily.

In the hope, that you never need it, Sony’s console could be repaired by the most experienced. To all the others, however, especially during the warranty, we recommend that you always rely on assistance service by Sony.
