Iranian security forces yesterday cracked down on protests in Kurdish areas of the country. Yesterday marked one year since the young Iranian Mahsa Amini died after being arrested by religious police.

According to state-affiliated media, “counter-revolutionaries” and “terrorists” have been arrested in several Iranian cities. Large-scale protests did not occur, possibly due to the large presence of security forces.

But videos on social media showed residents of cities including Tehran shouting slogans against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, such as “Death to the Dictator!” There were also protests in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran, and in Mashhad, in the northeast.

Security forces opened fire in the Kurdish city of Mahabad, the human rights organization Hengaw reported. At least one person is said to have been injured. And in the city of Kermanshah, seven people suffered injuries, Hengaw said.

Fire in prison

In addition, female prisoners have set fires in a prison near Tehran, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reports. Prison guards reportedly extinguished the fire and there were no casualties. According to the Kurdish Human Rights Network, the incident is related to the protests on the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death.

The anniversary of Amini’s death was also commemorated in other countries. Hundreds of people gathered in London, chanting “Woman, live freedom!” shouted. In Rome, about a hundred demonstrators gathered in front of the Iranian embassy. And in Paris, Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced that a garden in the French capital will now bear Amini’s name.

Mahsa Amini’s father was briefly detained today. Kurdish human rights groups report this. He was reportedly told not to publicly commemorate the death of his 22-year-old daughter. IRNA calls the reports about the arrest of father Amini lies, intended “to incite the people to take to the streets.”
