Protests for George Flyod: In New York, a police car hits a crowd

UNITED STATES – Tensions are mounting in the United States and some images filmed on the sidelines of the protests are particularly violent. As rallies and riots continue after George Floyd’s death during his arrest, relations between police and protesters are more strained than ever.

On social networks, two videos were widely relayed during the day of this Saturday, May 30. Each taken from a different angle of view, they show a police car facing a crowd of protesters in the Brooklyn neighborhood of New York. Booed and targeted by throwing objects, the police in their vehicle – stuck in the middle of the road – are joined by colleagues in a second police car, which he tries to follow by forcefully passing through the crowd. .

The scene takes place at the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and St. Mark’s Street, a stone’s throw from Barclay’s Center, where the arrested protesters are taken.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke during the day to discuss this incident, indicating that an investigation was underway, specifies CNN. “I’m not going to blame the officers who were trying to cope with an absolutely impossible situation. For starters, it was these people who were converging on this police car, who made the wrong choice and who created an untenable situation. I wish the officers had found a different approach, but let’s start from the beginning. The protesters in this video behaved badly in surrounding that police car, period. ”

“Leave the New York Police”

The sequence also triggered strong political reactions on social networks, including that of Alexandria Occasio-Cortez, elected Democrat in the House of Representatives. “They could have killed them, it is not known how many were injured. No one should be able to throw an SUV at a crowd, ”she laments.

Without referring directly to the videos that circulated on social networks, Donald Trump mentioned the New York police to him in a tweet saying in particular: “Let the New York police be left. There is no better than her but she must be able to do her job ”.

Pledge that tensions have grown in New York on Saturday, more than 200 people were arrested after clashes that left several injured within the police.

Police car previously set on fire

Near the Brooklyn Museum, a 27-year-old woman threw the molotov cocktail at the back window of a police van, which shattered in shock, a spokeswoman said, but the four officers had time to get out of the vehicle without damage.

They then arrested, in particular for “attempted murder of a police officer”, this woman from upstate New York, as well as her sister, who tried to intervene. At least one other police vehicle was also set on fire.
