Protesters Picket at Gimpo Airport’s VIP Room Exit as IAEA Secretary-General Raphael Grossi Evades Controversy

Secretary-General Grossi, who arrived at Gimpo Airport at around 10:30 pm on the 7th after completing a tour of Japan, stayed in the VIP room for about 30 minutes after arriving and did not appear.

At the same time, demonstrators, including members of civic groups opposing the discharge of contaminated water, waited for Secretary-General Grossi at the international exit of Gimpo Airport, holding pickets and shouting slogans.

Protesters waited to protest against Secretary-General Grossi, shouting “Go Home” and “No to dumping in the sea”, and about 300 police officers were deployed to the scene to ensure safety.

About an hour after arriving, Secretary-General Grossi and his party tried to come out through another exit in the airport building, not through the VIP room exit, but found reporters and protesters waiting at the scene and hurriedly hid in the elevator, creating a commotion. It was also weather.

At around 11:20 p.m., a black vehicle waiting near the exit approached in reverse, and after a while, the carriers that appeared to be Grossy’s luggage were transported to the trunk of the vehicle.

After midnight, around 0:30 am on the 8th, when a large number of police forces began to be reinforced in front of the exit of the VIP room again, a cloud of war hovered at the moment. Protesters started gathering again in groups of two and three, chanting slogans such as “Come out now” and “Don’t hide.”

However, in the end, Secretary-General Grossi did not appear. After radio communication between several police officers, the waiting police also left the scene.

According to the police, General Secretary Grossi escaped through the aisle of the airport cargo terminal to avoid the protesters.
