Protest stopped tree felling in Linz

With a protest action yesterday morning Baumschtzer drew attention to the in their opinion disproportionate mutilation of trees on the driveway from Unionstrae to Westbrcke in Linz. The action had an effect, the measures were stopped for the time being, and Asfinag admitted errors in the tree work in the days before.

As briefly reported yesterday, Gnter Eberhardt from the Linz Tree Rescue Initiative was annoyed that, under the “cloak” of tree care measures at the weekend, plane trees and black pines that had been standing for decades had been “mutilated” or cut in full.

In a conversation with ON, Eberhardt referred to the L 1122 standard, in which the “maximum cutback” is fixed at 20 percent. This was also the requirement of Asfinag. The reason why trees were then felled or reduced to a “skeleton” is due to the fact that “some things went wrong”, as those responsible said.

The Federal Forests, which are commissioned to prepare tree reports for the Autobahn, assured in a conversation with Eberhardt yesterday that the black pine would remain in the area of the West Bridge. Environmental attorney Martin Donat is now also interested in the proceedings.

“Incomprehensible”

“This way of dealing with the trees is incomprehensible and unacceptable. It can’t go on like this,” said Environment City Councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens), responding to the tree fillings that had heaped noticeably in Linz over the past few weeks. In addition to the fights around the sports field of the Pdagogische Hochschule am Freinberg, trees at the police sports field in Nietzschestrae, in the Biesenfeldsiedlung as well as in the green area at the West Bridge were cut “without any apparent reason”.

To prevent this in the future, Schobesberger again called for a tree protection law.
