Minneapolis – A wave of protests against racist police violence continues to roll through the USA, often turning into nightly riots, riots and destruction. On Sunday night, thousands again took to the streets from New York via Tulsa to Los Angeles to express their outrage over the death of the black George Floyd in Minneapolis on Monday. A white policeman had kneeled on the neck of the man who was handcuffed and lying on the ground for several minutes. His last words were: “I can’t breathe.”
This “I can’t breathe” has become a rallying cry in the protests. The likely Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said he was behind the “just cause” of the protests, but that destruction and violence should not suppress them. “The act of protesting overshadows the reason we are protesting,” he said in a statement.
President Donald Trump accused violent protesters of dishonoring the memory of George Floyd. “They just want to cause trouble,” he tweeted, praising the behavior of the Secret Service at a rally in front of the White House that he had observed. “They let the“ protesters ”scream and rant all they wanted,” but if they had crossed the fence around the White House, “they would have been met by the most vicious dogs and weapons I have ever seen . “
At least two people were shot dead, one in Detroit and one in Indianapolis. Many were injured and, according to the AP news agency, a total of almost 1,400 protesters were arrested in 17 cities. Governors in the states concerned imposed nocturnal bans on going out and activated the National Guard; in Minneapolis alone, more than 4,000 National Guards were deployed. 11,000 more were to be added. The city government said that this had stopped the riots for the time being.

In Los Angeles, officials with batons and rubber bullets pushed back protesters shouting “Black Lives Matter.” A man tried to smash the windshield of a police SUV with a skateboard, and a graffiti-covered patrol car was parked on the streets from LA on fire.
In Detroit, a person was killed when someone shot an off-road vehicle. The police initially reported that someone had fired at a crowd from the car. The death of a protester who climbed between two trailers of a Fed Ex courier truck was investigated in St. Louis. When the car drove off, the man was killed. According to police, there have been several firearm incidents in Indianapolis and one person has been killed.
Massive violence also occurred in Atlanta, Georgia, and Brooklyn, New York. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio threatened both protesters and police officers with consequences after their crackdown.
The large crowds at the protests, at which many neither wear face masks nor follow the distance rules despite the current corona pandemic, have raised concerns among health experts about the possible further spread of the new virus.
