the essentials in brief

  • Several hundred people demonstrated for more inclusion in Bern on Wednesday.
  • Pro Infirmis Switzerland called for the event.
  • Disabled people would continue to be severely discriminated against in all areas.

They followed the call from Pro Infirmis Switzerland and called for more inclusion for people with disabilities in Swiss politics. The people’s participation in the event is a sign of inclusion and more people with disabilities in politics, as Felicitas Huggenberger, director of Pro Infirmis, said in her opening speech.

The disability session last March clearly demanded full political participation at all levels.

22 percent of all Swiss have some form of disability

According to Pro Infirmis, people with disabilities make up 22 percent of the Swiss population. They would still be discriminated against in all areas – from politics to the world of work to housing. In this context, a popular initiative was launched at the end of April 2023 that aims to enshrine equality for people with disabilities in the constitution.

National councilors from various parties performed on the stage in front of the Federal Palace. In their speeches, Mattea Meyer (SP/ZH), Simone de Montmollin (FDP/GE), Balthasar Glättli (Greens/ZH), Melanie Mettler (GLP/BE) and Lilian Studer (EPP/AG) made a promise for people with disabilities to use more.

With a view to the federal elections this October, candidates with disabilities from all over Switzerland and from various parties gave a speech. In the current legislature, Christian Lohr (Mitte/TG) is the only person with a disability represented in the Federal Parliament.
