Private Plane Crash in Russia: Wagner Boss Yevgeny Prigozhin Among Passengers Killed

Jakarta

A private plane crashed in the Tver region of Russia. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin was included in the list of passengers on the plane that killed 10 people.

Reported by the BBC, Thursday (24/8/2023) Russian civil aviation authorities reported that all passengers died. The Wagner-linked Telegram channel, Gray Zone, earlier reported that Prigozhin’s private plane was shot down by an air defense system.

The plane was flying from Moscow to St Petersburg, with seven passengers and three crew members. Prigozhin led an unsuccessful uprising against the Russian armed forces in June.

The crash occurred on the same day that senior Russian general Sergei Surovikin was reportedly sacked from the post of air force commander. General Surovikin is known to have good relations with Prigozhin and has not been seen in public since the uprising.

Residents Hear 2 Explosions

The plane is said to have crashed near the village of Kuzhenkino in the Tver region, about halfway between Moscow and St Petersburg. Gray Zone said local residents heard two explosions before the crash and saw two trails of steam.

Tass news agency said Prigozhin’s Embraer Legacy caught fire when it hit the ground. The plane had been in the air for less than half an hour, he added.

An investigation is under way into the accident. Emergency services are searching the scene.
