The State Duma of Russia adopted in the second and third readings the amendments to the Penal Code, which require imprisonment for up to three years for publishing false news about the actions of the state abroad.
The new rules could affect diplomatic missions, the National Guard and the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
The federation council will consider the bill on March 23.
Punishments remain the same as for “fake news” about the military.
A fine of 700,000 to 1.5 million rubles or up to three years in prison is envisaged for knowingly disseminating so-called false information.
