Prince Edward Island: Amber alert triggered for a bad joke

SUMMERSIDE, PEI | Fearing they were dealing with a child abduction, police in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, raised an Amber alert on Monday afternoon, before realizing they were dealing with a bad joke.

Summerside police said one person called police at 11:58 a.m. local time claiming to see the child screaming out of a car window that they had just been kidnapped.

Immediately, the police of the second largest city in the province began research, triggered an Amber alert and notified the other police forces on the island, in particular to control access to the Confederation Bridge. A photo of the wanted car was also released by the police.

However, seeing this photo circulating on social networks, the person who had shouted that he had been kidnapped recognized himself and contacted the police to explain that there was a misunderstanding.

“She said she was a passenger in a car and shouted out the window at a friend in another car, jokingly, that she had been kidnapped,” Summerside police explained in early evening, specifying that she had ensured the validity of this version of events.
