Amazon Prime Video subscribers in the UK will soon be able to watch most James Bond films at no extra charge. All 25 official action series flicks will temporarily become part of streaming subscriptions starting April 15, Amazon said. The promotion is only valid for two months.
The offer relates exclusively to Great Britain, said Amazon when asked by heise online. “There is currently no information available for a start with Prime Video in Germany.” The “James Bond” films in Germany are currently not available as a subscription to any streaming service.
Amazon buys MGM
The fact that Amazon can offer the “James Bond” films at all is due to the recent takeover of the rights holder MGM: In March, Amazon completed the takeover of the US media group for 8.45 billion US dollars. In addition to “James Bond”, MGM’s portfolio also includes “Tomb Raider” and “Rocky”. The takeover of the media group is the second largest acquisition in Amazon’s history. Only the organic supermarket chain Whole Foods, which the company bought for 13.7 billion US dollars in 2017, was more expensive.
The decisive signal for approving the takeover came from the EU Commission. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) could have stopped the deal with a lawsuit, but missed a deadline on March 16. FTC boss Lina Khan is considered a critic of Amazon.
Amazon works under the title “007’s Road to a Million”. according to industry magazine Variety also on a reality show about the cult secret agent. At locations known from the films, participants should therefore overcome physical tasks and answer questions in teams of two.
