Preventing Dengue Fever Outbreaks in West Java: Wolbachia Mosquito Program Intensified

Jakarta – Death cases due to dengue hemorrhagic fever (DBD) in West Java (Jabar) are increasing. In early 2024, there were 4,637 dengue fever cases recorded in West Java. Of the total cases, 36 people died.

These dengue fever cases are spread across a number of big cities, including the cities of Bandung and Bogor. So, how is Wolbachia applied to prevent dengue fever in West Java?

Quoting from detikHealthHead of the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s Communications and Public Services Bureau, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said that the Wolbachia technology strategy had indeed been implemented, but only in a few areas and was still at an early stage.

“Wolbachia technology has been implemented, but in places where it has already been done, such as Bandung City, Semarang City, Kupang City, so it is only there and is only in the initial stages,” he explained when contacted. detikcom Wednesday (28/2/2024).

“Bogor City not yet,” he continued.

In general, the trend of reported cases is still lower than the previous year. The Indonesian Ministry of Health reported that based on government monitoring until the seventh week of 2024, a total of 10,655 cases were reported. Of this total, there were 89 deaths recorded.

“In several cities there has indeed been an increase. But in general the national figures, based on case data, have decreased by 30 to 40 percent compared to the same week period in 2023,” he explained.

There are 5 districts or cities with the highest cases of dengue fever

  • Kendari City: 564 cases
  • Kutai Kartanegara: 403 cases
  • Bogor City: 388 cases
  • Subang: 373 cases
  • West Bandung: 356 cases

Meanwhile, the 5 districts or cities with the highest cases of dengue fever deaths include:

  • Kendal: 10 cases
  • Blora: 9 cases
  • Sand: 4 cases
  • Subang: 3 cases
  • Purwakarta: 3 cases

There are still differences in the records of dengue cases in the Indonesian Ministry of Health and the Health Service, because a number of reports need to be verified.

The government reminds the public to always be aware of the symptoms that may appear when exposed to dengue fever. For the record, wolbachia is a type of bacteria that is introduced into the body of mosquitoes. Wolbachia plays a role in blocking the replication of the dengue virus in the mosquito’s body. As a result, mosquitoes containing wolbachia are no longer able to transmit the dengue virus when the mosquitoes suck the blood of people infected with the dengue virus.

The Wolbachia mosquito program has been intensified to reduce the threat of the spread and transmission of dengue fever. Trials for the spread of wolbachia mosquitoes have been carried out in Yogyakarta City and Bantul Regency, with plans to continue expanding. DHF cases in these two regions have decreased relatively significantly.
