Preventing and Treating Gingivitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Gingivitis is an inflammatory periodontal disease determined by the accumulation of bacterial plaque and tartar, characterized by a change in the color of the gum, accompanied by its inflammation and irritation. Unfortunately, in the absence of treatment, gingivitis can favor the appearance of periodontitis, a much more serious periodontal disease, which can even lead to tooth loss. The main cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene.

Fortunately, the condition can be prevented and treated with good oral hygiene practices, including brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and routine dental checkups. According to Dr. Andreea Zamfir, gingivitis is a common condition in people over 30 years old. Currently, the cause that causes men to be more vulnerable to developing the disease is not known. At the same time, gingivitis can also occur in people who live in a disadvantaged environment, as well as in people who smoke, because smoke affects the ability of a person’s body to fight infections.

“There are hundreds of species of bacteria living in the oral cavity, many of which are beneficial to the body. However, there are also many harmful bacteria in the oral cavity, which, when they accumulate in excess, due to the lack of tooth brushing, can affect the health of the teeth and gums. Lack of tooth brushing leads to the formation of dental plaque, which, if not removed by brushing teeth every day, becomes mineralized. This accumulation of minerals creates tartar, which will further promote the development of bacteria at the root of the tooth. Then, the inflammation at the level of the gums occurs as an immunological response of the body to this bacterial development”, explained the doctor.

Other causes that can lead to gingivitis: certain medications, such as oral or injectable contraceptives, severe vitamin C deficiency, hormonal changes that occur after menopause and pregnancy, dry mouth, obesity, exposure to heavy metals such as nickel (included in certain jewelry) and bismuth (present in some cosmetics).

There are also some gum infections that can cause gingivitis, such as viral diseases, fungal infections or canker sores. It should be noted that healthy gums are firm, pale pink in color and strongly attached to the teeth. Thus, you can tell that something is wrong in the following situations: the gums are swollen and dark red in color, the gums bleed when you brush or floss, bad breath, the gums loosen easily from the teeth. at an early stage the teeth will appear healthy and the gums will have a normal appearance, without being swollen or presenting any other unpleasant sensations. However, there may be sporadic bleeding after eating certain foods, such as apples. Also, if bleeding gums are not addressed, the teeth begin to accumulate plaque that leads to inflammation and pain.
