Presidential Candidates Respond to BEM UI’s Debate Challenge

Jakarta

Each party is a presidential candidatebacapres) has responded to the challenges of the University of Indonesia Student Executive Board (WELL UI). Anies Baswedan, Ganjar Pranowoand Prabowo Subianto respond in different tones. What are they saying?

BEM UI conveyed this challenge in a written press statement entitled ‘Please Come to UI If You Dare!’, last Monday (21/8). In context, they welcomed the Constitutional Court’s decision which did not change the rules for campaigning in educational places, such as the rules for campaigning in places of worship. The Constitutional Court did not completely prohibit campaigning in educational institutions (including campuses) as long as the political candidates did not carry campaign attributes and received permission from the host.

“If you really have the guts, BEM UI invites all presidential candidates/potential presidential candidates to come to UI because we are ready to skin all of your thoughts,” said BEM UI chairman Melki Sedek Huang in their written statement.

“We are ready to convey our aspirations and debate all your arguments if necessary,” said Melki.

Following are the responses of the presidential candidates:

Anies Baswedan

Anies Baswedan became the first presidential candidate to respond to this challenge. Anies accepted the challenge. Anies answered the challenge 65 minutes after news of the BEM UI challenge appeared on detikcom.

“Come on, when?” said Anies in his post on his personal Twitter account, Monday (21/8/).

The next day, Anies responded again when asked by journalists. “Come on. In fact, I want to ask when? Wis wayahe, wis wayahe (it’s time, it’s time),” Anies said at the NasDem Party DPW Jamboree throughout Central Java, reported by detikJateng, Tuesday (22/8). The latest news, BEM UI has confirmed that it will hold a presidential election contest on September 14. BEM UI immediately sent official invitations to each vice president.

Prabowo Subianto

Prabowo Subianto became the second presidential candidate to respond. The Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia responded through his spokesman, Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak. Prabowo stated that he was ready for dialogue.

“Pak Prabowo is ready to have a dialogue with anyone anywhere, especially on campus. His hobby and pleasure are discussions with intellectuals,” Dahnil said when confirmed, Monday (21/8).

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Gerindra Habiburokhman said that Prabowo would be open to visiting the campus if it was time to campaign and was also invited. Habiburokhman said the chairman of Gerindra had many ideas to discuss with the campus.

Ganjar Pranowo

Ganjar Pranowo, who is still working as Governor of Central Java, has responded several times. First, on Monday (21/8) evening when asked by journalists at Lumbini Park, Borobudur Temple. He made sure that he would serve the debate challenge from BEM UI.

“Yes, we will debate later. Thank you,” said Ganjar at the Lumbini Park of the Borobudur Temple while leaving journalists, Monday (21/8/2023), evening.

The next day at UGM, Ganjar returned to respond. He appealed to BEM UI and the public to hold back and not get too wrapped up in debate.

“What’s the debate? Patience. Wong has nothing to do with the debate yet. Patience,” said Ganjar.
