Presidential: at EE-LV, Jadot wants to go fast and Bayou wants “time”

A word often comes up in the mouths of environmentalists: “Historical.” This term is usually accompanied by new faces. Those of the mayors victorious in the municipal elections. They stroll in the alleys of the fertile city, in Pantin (Seine-Saint-Denis) where EE-LV organizes its summer days. All that’s missing is the double decker bus.

Secret

In the middle of the decor, a question asked by Yannick Jadot: when should the ecologists nominate their presidential candidate? The MEP has the answer. He wants a vote by activists before the end of the calendar year. One way to get ahead of the competition that is preparing, especially that of the rebellious Mélenchon. Problem: a majority of activists and leaders of Europe Ecology-the Greens do not share his analysis.

A new mayor blows: “Our activists do not want to talk about the presidential election, they want substance, ideas. This debate is beyond me. ” The party leader, for example, says: “We have to do things in stages. So, first the departmental and regional before thinking about the presidential election. ” Julien Bayou adds a touch of “pragmatism” in his argument: “We are a small party with five employees, we cannot set up a primary overnight. We need time and resources. ”

An answer that does not suit Yannick Jadot and his friends. They plan to put the pressure on in the days and weeks to come. It’s no secret: Jadot is in competition with the mayor of Grenoble, Eric Piolle. They make sure to never cross paths in the aisles. A cold war. Eric Piolle says: “Organize the appointment of our candidate [à la présidentielle] during the regional and departmental campaign, it is a bad thing. It’s almost suicide for our candidates. ”

Dream

Meanwhile, MEP Karima Delli is not happy. She sits on a small bench and swings: “Already, before thinking about our candidate, we must talk about the project and provide answers on the substance. And we must open our doors, organize a great democratic moment after the regional ones for the nomination of our candidate. We cannot say that ecology belongs to everyone and do things in our corner. ”

One thing puts everyone on the same line: victory is not a dream, it is possible to believe all green tendencies. The days of the “testimony” candidacy are a thing of the past. In September, the management of EE-LV will answer several questions, in particular on the regional and the presidential elections. A leader warns: “Julien will have to assume his role of leader in order to get everyone to agree and avoid unnecessary tension internally.” Friday, at the end of the day, the deputy of Deux-Sèvres Delphine Batho organized a debate on presidentialism. At his side, former Minister Dominique Bertinotti, journalist Edwy Plenel and screenwriter Eric Benzekri. Everyone agrees: the presidential election hurts democracy and parties and it drives even the nicest people mad.

A little later, we come across an activist. A regular that we meet at every environmental gathering. He shows up each time to listen to all the debates. “I am a member to make big politics, big transformations, not petty politics in the midst of the ambitious”, he said exploding with laughter. The quarantine continues: “Everyone is talking about Jadot and Piolle but when the applications are open, you will see, there will also be Batho, Delli, Lent… They all see themselves as superheroes.”
