President Volodymyr Zelensky sacked the Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK, Vadym Prystaiko, Friday (21/7) local time. This dismissal after Prystaiko criticized Zelensky’s response to military aid from Britain in recent times.
Zelensky has signed the letter dismissing Prystaiko, and it was posted on the Ukrainian Presidency’s website. However, it was not explained why Prystaiko was dismissed.
Collect AFPSaturday (22/7), previously Prystaiko criticized Zelensky’s sarcasm response in response to British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace’s comment that Ukraine should be grateful for the supply of weapons from its allies.
The row started when Wallace told reporters at a Nato summit in Vilnius held this month that Britain was not an “Amazon” for arms to Ukraine and suggested Kyiv could express more “gratitude”.
Responding to these conditions, Prystaiko assessed that Britain was the main supplier of weapons to Ukraine and also trained Ukrainian troops during the raging war.
On the one hand, Zelensky has responded to the press conference at the summit some time ago. He said how else should Ukraine express gratitude to England and to Wallace.
“We can wake up in the morning and express our words of gratitude to the minister in private,” Zelensky said.
Prystaiko is a diplomat who has served as ambassador to the UK since July 2020. She was previously Ukraine’s foreign minister from 2019 to 2020.
Meanwhile Zelensky was noted to have sacked a number of his diplomats including the Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk. As well as Ukraine’s representative in Germany, Zelensky also sacked his representatives in India, the Czech Republic, Norway and Hungary.
