President of Honduras, hospitalized by Covid-19, says that his country is becoming more and more complicated with the pandemic

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández acknowledged on Friday that Honduras “is becoming more complicated every day” by Covid-19, which has hospitalized him since June 18.

“What I can see is that the situation, because obviously, every day it gets more complicated, becomes more saturated and it takes important resources,” the president lamented in a video conference with ministers broadcast on the national radio and television network on Friday night.

“This is a war between life and death,” added the President, who participated without activating the video.

The 51-year-old ruler announced on June 17 that he suffered from discomfort and that laboratory tests confirmed that he was suffering from Covid-19. A day later, the government spokesman, Francis Contreras, assured that the President was admitted to the Military Hospital in the capital for pneumonia.

“A few days ago I started with symptoms, I thought it was something else and I lost three, four important days to be able to treat myself … I am a witness of how it is necessary to be precise in going to the doctor,” he said in the videoconference.

“This disease, as it is unknown, is highly volatile,” he added.

The ministers spoke of the hiring of personnel, the installation of more beds and fans, without pointing out that they are insufficient despite the president’s comments.

With 9.3 million inhabitants, Honduras records, according to the latest official report on Friday night, 15,994 patients, 471 dead and 1,678 recovered from the coronavirus.

Public and private hospitals have collapsed and authorities are improvising wards to care for patients, many of whom only die.
