The 38-year-old kindergarten teacher who created and distributed images of child abuse remains arrested. The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office confirms this.
The man, who had been teaching at De Springplank primary school in Onkerzele near Geraardsbergen for seven years, was arrested in early February in an investigation into “the creation and distribution of sexual abuse images of children”, the East Flanders public prosecutor’s office said at the time.
The teacher, who is also known in the region as a musician and music teacher, was reported to the police after Europol recovered child abuse images that identified the school. The federal police were then informed and a house search took place.
It is still unclear how many victims have been identified. The public prosecutor’s office says that the “investigation is still ongoing” and can therefore not provide more information.
The man will remain in jail for a month longer. His lawyer Jeroen De Backer said that the teacher “realizes that he is suffering from a serious illness and that he needs to be treated”.
