Preacher Rachid Haddach dies: Unia receives seven hate speech complaints

Hateful comments following the death of the worshiped preacher in the Muslim community will not go unpunished.

The announcement of the death of Belgian-Moroccan preacher, teacher and lecturer Rachid Haddach, who died this weekend, caused a shock wave in the Muslim community. The 49-year-old man worked as a volunteer preacher with several schools and mosques in Brussels where he worked with young people.

A funeral prayer was organized at the Khalil mosque in Molenbeek last Monday. But as the mosque was too small to accommodate all the people who came in large numbers to give it a last message, the streets had to be closed to traffic and thousands of people began to pray in public space.

A scene that shocked several people who were quick to make it known on social networks. Hard messages, like that of the Vlaams Belang who took the opportunity to recover the “event” via Twitter, or another individual who regretted “no longer driving in a truck”.

Shocking remarks, which however will not go unpunished. Several people have decided to file a complaint with Unia, the center for equal opportunities and the fight against racism. The organization confirms that seven complaints have so far been addressed. “These are complaints of incitement to hatred, violence or discrimination”says Patrick Charlier, spokesperson for Unia. “These people risk a month to a year in prison as well as a fine of 50 to 1000 euros.”

Among those who complained was Osama Karan Ziani, 22, who knew Rachid Haddach well. “I considered him a big brother. He was a person who inspired me enormously. I grew up with his son since we were in kindergarten and with whom I attended evening classes. He always gave me advice to succeed in my studies, he instilled in me great values like never giving up on anything. He said that we need people like me in our society “, explains this young man who is studying education. “He also taught me to never respond to hate with hate, always advocating living together and caring. You just have to watch his videos on Youtube to be convinced. He wanted to give a good image of our religion and the youth of Molenbeek. “

That’s why hateful comments irritate him the most. “Vlaams Belang masquerades him as a hate preacher, but it is completely false. He was a fervent defender of tolerance. He always said that we must consider the human first, and religion then. I saw all these comments, I was shocked and annihilated. I hope that we find these people so that they can be sentenced. It is not just one person who is affected but the whole Muslim community “, concludes Oussama, who will also file a complaint with the Brussels West police zone (Molenbeek, Ganshoren, Jette, Koekelberg, Ganshoren)
