UPDATED: None of the Prague football teams won in Thursday’s round of 16 of the Europa League. Sparta lost to Liverpool 1:5 and Slavia will lose 2:4 against Milan. However, some fans of the sewn-up team are also disappointed that they could not watch football on TV. Several of them contacted our editors, we also noticed similar comments under various articles and posts on social networks.

Although the team had a promising start to the game, the red card for Diouf slowed it down. They managed to score two goals even in ten minutes. Coach Trpišovský stated in the post-match press conference that he believes that the 2:4 result gives a chance for revenge.

“I believe that it is within our abilities to beat Milan and advance through them to the next stage of the Europa League. At the moment when we play 11 on 11, we will be able to put even more pressure on the opponent, which was already shown at the start of the match. The first 30 minutes of the match unfolded exactly according to our plan,” quoted the coach club website.

Still only Sparta

Spectators on public Czech TV could watch Sparta’s home match against Liverpool on Thursday. Celebrities, unless they subscribe to a private provider that has the Sport 2 on offer, are out of luck. So if they wanted to watch live.

On Thursday evening, after Sparta’s match with Liverpool, the Czech team’s next match in the Europa League will start. Slavia will attempt a miracle…

The ČT Sport channel only offered viewers a recording from half past twelve at night, for which it acquired the rights from Sport 2.

“At least in the first rounds of the basic group of the European League, it used to be that Sparta was on CT one week and Slavia the next. But lately it seems to me that they only broadcast Sparta,” Slavia fans who turned to us don’t like it.

The first three rounds of the basic group of the Europa League really alternated the matches. In the first round, ČT Sport viewers could see Slavia’s match against the home team Servette, in the second round between Sparta and Betis, and in the third between Slavia in Rome and the local AC. That was October 26, 2023.

For the last time

In the fourth round, spectators watched Sparta’s match with Rangers, in the next round the Reds’ rematch with Betis, and in the last round of the basic group, Aris Limassol versus Sparta Prague.

Sparta played Galatasaray in the elimination round. The first away match was broadcast by Czech Television, as well as the second leg. Slavia avoided this stage thanks to direct progress to the round of 16.

Our editors tried to find out who decides on the selection. Sport 2 was the first to call.

“Czech Television has the right to the first and only choice from each round (across the European League and the European Conference League) which match will be broadcast by them, and it is really only on this choice, the teams do not have to change stations. Other matches are broadcast on Sport1 and Sport2,” Irena Novotná from the AMC Networks group, which represents Sport2, told PrahaIN.cz.

And although it seemed that even in the rematch, viewers would see Sparta on Czech TV, everything turned out to be different in the end.

Czech Television did not comment until after the release of the material. The executive director of ČT Sport, Jiří Ponikelský, decided that Slavia’s rematch with AC Milan will be broadcast next Thursday at 21:33 on Thursday, when the Sparta Prague match had already ended.

They say it’s because of attractiveness and balance.
