Powerful Slovak oligarch arrested in murdered journalist case | Abroad

Jaroslav Hascak, who manages the Penta financial group, has been one of the most powerful and richest men in Slovakia for more than twenty years. The news site Kuciak worked for published an article stating that Hascak had secretly struck a deal with politicians to keep evidence against him hidden in exchange for money.

Hascak has now been arrested in the case of the murder of Kuciak and his fiancé in early 2018. Hascak told journalists that he does not know exactly what he is being accused of.

Penta is one of the main players in the real estate markets in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland. The group also owns banks and financial companies in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, significant shares in Slovak and Czech media, a health insurance company and several private and outpatient clinics.

In addition, pharmacy chains and an ambulance service in Slovakia are also part of the company.
