Power cable right through Schiermonnikoog and the Wadden area seems off the track | Inland

This can be deduced from a letter from State Secretary Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius (Economic Affairs and Climate) about future plans for offshore wind. In the coming years, new wind farms will be built in the North Sea, including in the area above the islands.

It was previously thought of laying one cable (2 gigawatts) right through Schiermonnikoog. The municipality of Schiermonnikoog and environmental clubs, among others, oppose this. The independent EIA committee also ruled that other options should be explored.

Eemshaven

It is now being investigated whether ‘together with the other six route options examined’ and the landing from another wind farm, one process can be started to land no less than 4.7 gigawatts in Eemshaven.

The ministry also promises to take into account recommendations from the Wadden Academy, which issued advice at the request of the House of Representatives. “With this, the 2 gigawatt cable is actually gone,” says D66 MP De Groot, who opposed the Wadden Cable Plan with fellow party member Boucke. They say they are ‘glad’ that ‘clean energy generation and nature conservation now go hand in hand.’

The ministry spokesperson says that the option about Schiermonnikoog will still remain open formally, but that “the landing via the eastern side of the Wadden Sea is indeed first being looked at.”
