Potential Threat of Radiation Leakage at Zaporozhye NPP: Evacuation Exercises and Precautions

“Even last year, an appropriate anti-crisis headquarters was created, and such exercises were carried out. Now we are conducting repeated exercises, taking into account the shortcomings that were last time. We have worked out various scenarios, including the most critical one, when the spread of radiation is wider. in total, about 300 thousand people from four regions will need to be evacuated,” Vlasenko said.

He clarified that we are talking about 138 thousand residents of the Zaporozhye region, 168 thousand – Dnepropetrovsk, 22 thousand – Kherson and Nikolaev regions. With such a development of events, 20 trains will be involved in the evacuation (about 2 thousand people in one train).

In the event of a real threat, three decontamination (washing) points will be deployed in Zaporozhye, 23 collection points will be organized, where people from the contaminated zone will come. A total of 107 buses will be involved in the evacuation.

Context:

Zaporozhye NPP in Energodar, Zaporozhye region, has been under the control of Russian invaders since March 2022.

On June 20, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Kirill Budanov, said that the invaders had mined a cooling pond at the ZNPP. At the same time, the IAEA did not see mines near the cooling pond.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said on June 22 that the aggressor country of the Russian Federation is preparing a terrorist attack at the ZNPP with the release of radiation.
