Postponed Consultation Committee is looking for a happy medium for…

The Consultation Committee, which was moved from Friday to Monday due to the severe weather, is in two minds from 2 p.m. on Monday: not to relax and not to tighten up. The sharply rising infection figures, most of them with the delta variant, are a cause for concern, although hospital admissions are not (yet) following this trend. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo warns against unnecessary alarmism, Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke is more cautious.

The federal government and the federal states will discuss the state of affairs in the corona pandemic on Monday. It will be examined which corona measures are still necessary in the coming months and how large events and festivals can take place safely, for example by using a corona pass.

At the moment, 66.9 percent of all Belgians have received a first shot and 45.9 percent have been fully vaccinated, according to figures released by the vaccination task force on Saturday.

Mandatory vaccination of healthcare providers is not an issue, Prime Minister de Croo told VTM Nieuws on Sunday afternoon. “When I see how far we have come in recent months by convincing people, that is not the case.”

“Don’t panic”

According to the Prime Minister, the Consultation Committee should not lead to a tightening of the measures. “We must remain cautious, but also do not panic,” De Croo told VTM Nieuws about the rising infection figures. “The vaccination campaign is working. We are not going to relax, but we are not going to give up our freedoms either.”

Minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke again hammered in the House on Thursday about testing young people before they leave for camp. According to the Vooruit deputy prime minister, this is necessary because the infection rates are currently rising mainly among children and young people. That is also the group that has not yet been vaccinated against Covid-19. Flemish Minister of Youth Benjamin Dalle (CD&V) is against: “We are not going to change the rules of the game during the match.”

The measures for the months of August and September regarding indoor events, church services, fairs and markets are also on the table.

The Consultation Committee starts at 2 p.m.
