Armed men may have tried with a hijacked helicopter on Friday to help with an attempt to escape from a prison. The Antwerp public prosecutor’s office applies VRT NWS that the police are still looking for three suspects.
The helicopter was hijacked on Friday in Deurne, Belgium, near Antwerp. The pilot was threatened by three men and forced to fly to the prison in the south of Brussels.
The helicopter then circled above the prison for some time, but when a police helicopter appeared nearby, it flew on to a parking lot in Heilissem. There the suspects fled.
It is not known exactly what the men intended. It is also unclear, in the case of an escape, who the hijackers tried to free. The police are still investigating the tracks in the helicopter.
A spokesman for prisons in Belgium emphasizes to the news site that no prisoners escaped on Friday. However, all activities within the prisons in Belgium have been canceled for the rest of the day.
